Team Cebu City rules Division B

PAOLO Pascual pulled two saves to lead Team Cebu City (TCC) to a scintillating 5-4 shootout win over a gritty Cebu International School (CIS) in yesterday's Aboitiz Division B finals at the San Roque Parish football grounds. Both teams ended the regulation tied, 2-2 with both teams exchanging their hold of the lead.

Congratulations Dylan! And to all the graduates

Max Dylan is my nephew and for me, he is the smartest eight-year-old kid in Cebu.  He's my favorite nephew, although his younger brother--a raucous one-- (and his cousin bia)  are a close second. Dylan just finished second grade and I think he's as smart--if not smarter--than I was when I finished elementary. He hasn't bitten the football bug yet, but we played football a few times on the street outside their house and he's getting on. Congrats.

The mysterious caller and the puncher

In one of the games at the Cviraa, when Cebu was leading 1-0 (I forgot against whom) it seemed one official made a call to have the game stopped. Hmmm... In the Thirsty Cup, one coach from the losing team in the finals threw a punch at the winning coach. I read the report of the coach and the organizer...(While this happened, I was bored stiff covering a golf event somewhere else) Some people never learn.

After holding Team Cebu City scoreless in the first 60 minutes, Metropolitan bubble finally broke in the 60th as it lost to the younger squad, 0-3. Here are the pics, courtesy of JP.

Some things never change

I met a few guys who went to the Cviraa football meet, and from their stories, it seems, nothing has changed in how (ironically) the Department of Education run the football tournament. I've played in the then Decs (Department of Education Culture and Sports) meet in high school and I tell you, it seems, the official running the tournament either think that football is:

TCC, CIS arrange finals showdown

TEAM Cebu City (TCC) and the Cebu International School (CIS) set up an interesting Aboitiz Division B finals after contrasting wins in yesterday?s semifinals at the San Roque Parish football grounds. The youthful TCC ran Metropolitan FC aground, 3-0, while CIS had to survive losing its two main cogs and Miguel Red had to come up with a big save in their 2-1 escape over Queen City United. Aside from getting a chance to play for the crown, the two teams will be promoted to Division A next year.

Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zidane visit Cebu (Exclusive!)

Image
Unknown to millions of their fans around the world, three football greats are now in Cebu to start their one-week furlough in the Philippines. Football giants Ronaldinho, of Brazil and FC Barcelona, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho's former teammate in the Brazil national team who now plies his trade in Italy and Zinedine Zidane dropped by the other day in Cebu. TAKING PICTURES LIKE TOURISTS. Ronaldinho snaps a photo of Zidane picking up his luggage at the airport on the way to the Taxi stand in Mactan.

Make way for the girls

As the Men's Aboitiz Division B winds up--thankfully with no more punches thrown-- and the Aboitiz Boys 14 picks up pace, the Cebu Football Association will hold an 11-a-side tournament for the Girls 16 at CIS. After playing mostly in the seven-a-side matches in football festivals, the girls will get a taste of real football when they play the full side. The tournament will also be used to pick the players for the Cebu squad which will see action in the Philippine Football Federation Under-17 Girls Championship this summer

CIS trounces USC (ako nagsuwat ani)

YOUNG guns Team Cebu City (TCC) and Cebu International School (CIS) took a step closer to a title showdown after winning their quarterfinals matches in the Aboitiz Division B yesterday at the San Roque Parish. TCC, which recently won the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association title, survived an early scare to beat Cebu Institute of Technology (CIT), 7-1, while CIS blanked the University of San Carlos (USC), 3-0.

Red Cards fly in Div. B

HINGS got ugly on the pitch in the Aboitiz Division B yesterday after the University of San Carlos’ Melvin Elle was downed by a vicious punch in their 7-0 win over FC Inter Cebu at the San Roque Parish yesterday. USC had just scored their sixth goal when two minutes later Reino Ross Amora punched Elle, leaving the Carolinian blooded from a gaping wound just below his eye.

The 59th minute incident

Here's a few update regarding that punch. The USC player has undergone surgery to fix his fractured bone in the nose. Bill before surgery is P18,000, and I think professional fees are not included yet. Here's a qoute from the USC athletic director. "Atong ikiha katong nanumbag, sila'y pabayron pilay gasto sa ospital,"

Brunei edges past RP, 3-2

TWO late goals and the Philippines' shot of making it to the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy U21 semifinals was dashed after Brunei eked out a 3-2 win yesterday. The loss kept the Philippines at the bottome with 0 points, while Myanmar is number one with six points and Brunei second with four. The Philippines took a 2-0 lead in the first half, before Brunei scored in the 55th and the host  scored two more goals in the final two minutes. Had the Philippines won, it would have gained the second spot as Brunei with be at third with one point together with Cambodia, which got routed by Myanmar, 7-0, in the other game yesterday.

While there regular teammate in out of town sojourn, Michael Sharpe, watched helplessly as Myanmar handed the Philippines a nice 9-1 beating, the Team Cebu City U19 are handing out routs of their own. After getting held to a draw (I'm still quite in disbelief about this) by FC Inter Cebu, TCC turned their ire on Xsem Bros, which I presume is a team of former seminarians. Blui Arriola scored four in TCC's 6-2 win.  Here are the pictures.

Myanmar crushed RP U21, 9-1

AFTER getting used to seeing the country winning or figuring closely in international matches, the first day of the Hassan Bolkiah Cup in Brunei will sure dampen fans after the U21 team got crushed, 1-9, to Myanmar yesterday. Phil Younghusband may have added to his scoring tally, but the Fil-Brit could just as well forget the woeful match, which saw Myanmar getting the first goal in the third minute courtesy of Hia Aye Htwe, according to the event's official website.
