Myanmar crushed RP U21, 9-1
AFTER getting used to seeing the country winning or figuring closely in international matches, the first day of the Hassan Bolkiah Cup in Brunei will sure dampen fans after the U21 team got crushed, 1-9, to Myanmar yesterday.
Phil Younghusband may have added to his scoring tally, but the Fil-Brit could just as well forget the woeful match, which saw Myanmar getting the first goal in the third minute courtesy of Hia Aye Htwe, according to the event's official website.
Htwe again found an opening in the leaky RP defense to bang his second in the 14th and Si Thu Than banged in the third in the 27th before Htoo Kyaw scored in the 34th for a comfortable 4-0 cushion at the end of the first half.
In the second half, Younghusband, who scored six goals in the Asean Football Federation championships last year, scored just a minute into the half to narrow the lead.
However, the captain's goal was the lone bright spot for the Philippines, which was the last team to arrive in the competition, as Myanmar made it a four goal cushion in the 53rd and extended it to five in the 59th.
After the debacle against Myanmar, whose senior team lost a semifinal spot in the AFF Championships after getting held to a 0-0 draw by RP, the Philippines will meet Brunei on March 5 and Cambodia on March 7.
Aside from Younghusband, the other Pinoys started in the game are Jaypee Coopera, Robert LEcoto
Dennis Montialbucio, Jason Cordova, Bongbong Dorlas, Matthew Hartmann, Gester Gayunan, Francis Gustilo, Jayson Panhay and Eliezer Fabroada. Jayson Panhay, Nicolas Leonara, Dave Villon and Bern Calumpang came in as subs, while Michael Daniel Sharpe wasn't utilized.
