News: DPWH to raze iconic Fuente Osmena, to turn it to Olympic Skating Rink

HERE'S a piece of good news to skaters--the Department of Public Works and Highways will raze the iconic Fuente Osmena circle and turn it to an Olympic Skating Area.
DPWH Region 7 spokesperson Beigh No Ang said the national goverment has allocated P10 billion for the project, which was conceptualized when Cebu City traffic personnel announced that they would start apprehending skateboarders and roller-bladers in the highways.
"This project shows that DPWH have the public's welfare in mind, because this would prevent traffic accidents that could be fatal," said the spokesperson
who tried at first to ask for anonymity during a press con at the Avril Folle Lounge at the Cebu Business Prank.
DPWH will raze Fuente Osmena on April 1 and also cut the trees. They will also dig a four-meter hole for a half-pipe.
There will also be an assortment of rails, verts, ramps and jumps for the skating park that DPWH projects would
accommodate 5,000 people.
"We project that due to environmental concerns and rising gas prices, people who drive cars would start using skateboards and roller blades to work," he said.
DPWH also said this move is part of their support to the Olympic movement as they want to discover the next Olympian who will represent the
Philippines in skateboarding in the Rio Olympics in 2016.
When a reporter pointed out that skateboarding is not part of the Rio Olympics, the reporter was escorted out.
"We are sorry about that, what I meant was we want to support Philippine sports and the environment," he said.
To ensure the design of the Olympic Skating Rink stays current, DPWH announced it will be razed and re-designed every five years.
