Fair Play: Sun.Star Football Cup returns on Nov. 23
THE Second Sun.Star Football Cup will be on Nov. 23 and 24 still at the Cebu City Sports Center. Just like last year, which attracted over 150 teams, this year’s tournament will only have the age group divisions and not the men’s and women’s opens.
The divisions this year are the Players 6, 8, 10, 12 and the Boys and Girls 14, 17 and 19. Last year, there was a Girls 12 division but because of the lack of entries, we’ve decided to just merge the Boys and Girls 12 to one division. It will still be a seven-a-side tournament and will be run by the same guys running the Thirsty Tournament, as they are the most experienced when it comes to running football festivals, having run the very first festival in Cebu.
This event is sanctioned by the Cebu Football Association, which will be providing referees. Also, our tournament will be the first to comply with some changes the CFA is doing regarding the age divisions. The Players 6 is now called the Under 7, the Players 8 the Under 9, the Players 10 the Under 11, the Players 12 the Under 13 and so on.
Aside from the medals for the top two teams in each divisions, there will be an MVP.
Last year, the MVP got a P1,000 passbook from Suns Savings and for this year, our Ads and Promo are still contacting sponsors for the award. What is sure though is that Dan Palami has promised to give a signed Azkals replica jersey for the winners.
Another new thing this year is that the Sun.Star Football Cup will be the first local tournament that will be streamed live online through the Sunnex team, the same people in charge of streaming the Cesafi games. Of course, I’ll be offering some inputs and no, I won’t be doing any commentaries.
Registration fee is P1,000 per team but the organizers will be allowing some poor but deserving teams to register for free. It could be one team per division and this will be for public school teams or those based in poor communities. So, if you think you should get in for free, throw me an e-mail.
We will be sending out the invitations in a few days and if you want one, contact Hazel at 254 6100 local 120.
There will be a meeting for the team representatives on Oct. 19 and the deadline for the submission of entries is Nov. 8, so you have roughly a month.
Last year’s tournament was quite a blast of course, because it was held a couple of days after that historic win against Singapore and some of the Azkals decided to stay over as guests. Right now, there are no plans to get any special guest though that may change but what is sure though is that like last year, there will be a lot of gimmicks for the parents and other fans who will watch the tournament. We hope to make that a signature of our tournament.
If you want to join in the fun, there are two things you must do. Follow the official Sun.Star Cebu account on both twitter and instagram as the contest will be conducted online.
We are still cooking up some of the online gimmicks for the event, so stay tuned for updates.
