Chieffy scores 5 in Erco's win over Hijos

CHIEFFY Caligdong showed up with his golden boot to tow Erco FC to an easy, 6-2, win over the Hijos Del Pueblo in Group B action of the 13th Cebu Interclub Football Cup men’s open division at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The win puts Erco, which lost to Cebu Queen City United (CQCU), 5-0, last Monday to second spot in their group with six points, trailing CQCU on goal difference.

Caligdong, who plays for the Green Archers United in the United Football League, showed up for the tournament with Boogie Margarse to boost Erco and immediately scored five goals in his first game. He got his first in the seventh minute, collecting a cross inside the box and pivoting past two defenders for the first goal.

However, Nelson Eco equalized for Pueblo minutes later as he took advantage of a wrong approach by the Erco keeper.

A give and go by Caligdong and Raffy Abano got Erco the lead in the 40th, before Caligdong got two quick goals including one off a lovely free kick for a comfortable 4-1 lead at halftime. Caligdong got two more goals 15 minutes into the second half before Eco got his second, beating the defense on his own and sending his strike to the bottom right.

Today, Erco will take on the dangerous San Roque Rehab, which routed Cebu Korea FC, 10-0, last Monday, to keep its hold of the second spot.

Yesterday, Cebu Korea FC lost by default to Danao FC.

In Group B, Hiroshi beat Don Bosco United FC, 6-1, on a Rodney Gandiongco hat trick to take the top spot on goal difference.

Hiroshi has seven points on two wins and a draw along with Samba FC, which relied on two late goals to stun Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC), 4-2. Hiroshi’s rout gave it a five-goal cushion over Samba, while CAFC dropped to third spot with six points on two wins and a loss.

University of Cebu (UC)-Nigeria is fourth with one win and one loss.

Today, CAFC will take on Hiroshi FC in an early clash of favorites, while Samba FC will face UC Nigera, while CQCU will gun for its third straight win against Hijos del Pueblo.
