BMALV, Don Bosco 3 and Don Bosco 4 won their final group matches to vault to the top of their brackets in the Players 8 division of the Aboitiz Cup.

BMALV, which trailed Bright Academy on goal difference for the top spot in Group A, beat Springdale A, 2-1, to bolt to the top with a perfect 4-0 record.

James Anoos scored the first goal in the 12th minute, before Edrigo Unchuan equalized for Springdale in the 20th.  Ariant Antoyan got the go ahead goal in the 26th.

With the win, BMALV dislodged Bright Academy from the top spot with 12 points from four wins.

Don Bosco 3 also vaulted on top of Bracket C on goal difference after beating Warzhocks, 1-0, to finish with 10 points. NFNG (no first name given) Pacana scored the lone goal in the 26th minute.

CIS dropped to second with a 3-1 mark and a plus 11 goal difference but will advance as one of the best second-ranked teams.

As expected, Don Bosco 4 completed its sweep of the elimination round games, routing Bright Academy B 12-0, to top Group D over Hijas de Jesus, which has nine points on a 3-1 card.  NGNG Aparri had five goals, while NGNG Franzuela had four goals.

In a battle of teams already eliminated, San Roque FC B got its first win via default after Don Bosco F failed to show up.

The teams who advanced to the next round are Group winners MALV of Group A, Lahug B of Group B, Don Bosco 3 of Group C, Don Bosco 4 of Group D, USC BED of Group E and Ateneo de Cebu of Group F.  Save for Don Bosco 3, the rest undefeated in the group stage.

CIS of Group C advance as the best second-ranked team with 10 points on a 3-1 record, while Hijas de Jesus got the last spot in the knockout round, beating Bright Academy by two goals.

Hijas de Jesus and Bright had nine points on a 3-1 win loss record, but Hijas has a better goal difference of 17 compared to Bright's 15.

The quarterfinal round will be played on Feb. 23, a weekend after the 10th Thirsty Football Cup.
