From the archive: Phil's training with LA Galaxy

(Here's a report I wrote about Phil Younghusband and the LA Galaxy for Sun.Star Cebu on Jun 13, 2007)

IF THE football gods smile on our country, Pinoys may have another reason to cheer for Major League Soccer’s LA Galaxy.

And it’s not Victoria Beckham but Fil-Briton, Philip Younghusband.

A report by former Sun.Star assistant sports editor, Jack Biantian, in www.pinoysoccer.com, the premier site for football news in the Philippines, said the Chelsea reserve and mainstay of the RP team is with the LA Galaxy, but not as a member of the team.

He is just training with them.

However, there is still no confirmation from the US club whether Younghusband will get a first team contract with the club, which will have world class footballer David Beckham on July 1.

“Philip Younghusband has been in training with the Galaxy, but at this time, there is no decision made on whether or not we will sign him,” read an e-mail from the LA Galaxy to Biantian, who also writes a column “Bend It” for pinoysoccer.com, that was forwarded to Sun.Star Cebu.

Younghusband’s joining the Galaxy is expected to boost football in the Philippines, where, like in the US, the sport is more known as “soccer.”

The Fil-Brit has played for the Philippines senior team in the Asean Football Federation Qualifier in the Philippines with his brother, James.

Like his brother, he also suited up for the country’s U-23 team in the Southeast Asian Games in 2005 and both are expected to play in this year’s Seag in Thailand.
