Lost Boys beat Springdale

VALENTINO Calvo played the hero’s role for Lost Boys as they defeated Paref-Springdale B, 1-0, in the Boys 17 championships of the 8th Thirsty Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

Just as the game seemed headed to a shootout, Calvo scored in the nick of time.

Calvo’s first shot was deflected by the keeper but the ball went back his way and he struck the rebound from pointblank range for the lone goal of the match.

Lost Boys keeper Leonard Tan was named the MVP.

The Lost Boys are composed players from Don Bosco Technology Center, who are the defending champions of the Boys 17 division. DBTC didn’t field any entry this year but some of its players decided for form teams of their own.

The Lost Boys beat Paref-Springdale A, 2-0, in the semifinals, while Paref-Springdale B edged out Abellana National School (ANS)-Pomeroy, 3-2, in penalty shootout in the other semifinal match.

After winning the Girls 19 crown last Saturday, the University of San Carlos captured another title as its younger squad won the Girls 17 division title champions with a 3-1 win over Ateneo de Cebu. Samantha Su was awarded the MVP trophy.

MTI A won the Boys 14 crown with a 2-1 penalty shootout victory over Abellana National School-Pomeroy, while Queen City United (QCU) B defeated Hiroshi B to claim the crown in the 42-and-Above category.

JV Malinao of MTI got the Boys 14 MVP, while Gorio Balsikas got the MVP in the 42-Above division, the oldest age group in the tournament.

In the men’s division, which was being played at press time, defending champion Queen City B took the top spot in the knockout stage with nine points. Leopars FC was second, while Queen City A got third. Others in the top six are Tsuneishi, Southwestern University and San Roque Royal United.

Others who made the round-of-32 stage were Hiroshi A, Hellhounds, Hiroshi B, Los Pintados, Coast Guard, Pilots United, B-Meg SAFC, University of Southern Philippines Alumni, JCAD, Don Bosco (DB) A, DB B, Immor FC, Astra, DB C, DB D, Lexmark, Camputhaw United, Asenso Siaton, Hotspur, Indiana FC, Chakala, CUFC, CTU, Barili FC, Bayawan FC and Immaculadistas.

The two squads from Manila—Laos FC and ATP Global—were a no-show in the three-day football festival.

Aside from the Men’s Open, the 36-above and ladies open divisions were still being played at press time.
