Cash-strapped Cesfa relies on doleouts to join Thirsty Cup
THE odds that the Canduman Elementary School Football Association (Cesfa) had to beat just to join the 8th Thirsty Cup were made obvious by their mode of transportation—a garbage truck.
The sight of kids climbing down from a garbage truck may be a startling contrast to the long lines of private cars that clogged traffic at the Cebu City Sports Center, but on the pitch, the team of Coach Jun Santillan is just as determined and just as good as the private school teams.
In their first game of the P10, the diminutive Kenneth Domingo scored thrice in Cesfa A’s 4-1 win over Sacred Heart School Hijas de Jesus, while their Team B held powerhouse Springdale C to a 1-1 draw.
That Cesfa was able to join the Thirsty Cup showed the dedication of the coach, teachers and parents of the team. The team formerly had M. Lhuillier Sports
Development Foundation as its backer but the contract ended last September.
“Chip-in, chip-in lang mi sa gasto,” Santillan told Sun.Star Cebu last night. “The school PTA and the barangay captain donated an amount, and the rest was covered by the parents.”
Santillan said that despite losing their sponsor last September, Cesfa still trains continually.
“Unsaun man nato nga hilig man gyud ang mga bata sa football?” he said, while pointing out to a few of his players who kicked around a football at the track oval after their game.
Santillan said they were forced to skip the Aboitiz Cup, where they finished in the top three last year, because of lack of funds.
Since most of their funds go to the registration fees, transport and food of the players, a uniform is just an afterthought for them.
For the Thirsty Cup, some of the players still wear their old uniform with their former sponsor’s logo, while the rest just don plain red shirts.
It was also what they did during the Sinulog Cup, where they won the P10 division.
“Iyahay na lang mi’g gasto. Karun pag-uli, amo na sad to textan ang driver sa garbage truck para kwaun mi. Wa man tay mahimo,” he quipped.
For this year’s Thirsty Cup, Cesfa has one entry in the P6, P10 Boys 12 divisions and two in the P8 divisions.
Meanwhile, in the other games yesterday, Subangdako FC scored two wins in the Girls 12 division against San Carlos City (2-0) and Ateneo de Cebu, (1-0). Ateneo also had two wins against San Roque FC and CSCST.
In the Boys 14, Springdale A held MTI-B, the original batch of Cesfa players, to a 0-0 draw, while Springdale B routed MMIS, 2-0.
The games of the 9th edition of the Thirsty Cup, which drew 243 teams, will continue today.
