PFF to get $1.5 million in five years

THE bounty the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is getting because of the Azkals' recent success just got larger.

Aside from the aid it will get from the German Football Association, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan have committed to an annual aid of $100,000 for the next five years for the national teams competitions.

The aid will amount to $1.5 million or P64.5 million. PFF president Mariano Araneta announced the development yesterday.

“The heads of their respective federations have heard a lot about our national team and have extended not only financial but other assistance as well,” Araneta said in a statement.

Araneta said the aid was committed by the presidents of the Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan football federations when he attended the Asian Football Confederation Congress in Doha, Qatar last Jan. 6 together with PFF secretary general Chito Manuel and POC chairman Monico Puentevella.

Aside from the financial aid, the three countries are also willing to host the Azkals training camp.

“These three federations also committed to allow our teams to train in their respective countries, complete with air fare, at their own expense and extend other forms of support for our national team
competitions,” Araneta added.

Araneta said part of the fund will be used to stage a national 23-Under tournament in May and another national 19-Under tournament, where the PFF can scout players for the Southeast Asian Games in
Jakarta this November.

The SEA Games tourney is limited to players 23 years old and under.

Dan Palami, who was also recently appointed as the national teams committee chairman, said the new funds showed “the credibility of the present leadership under president Araneta.”

Aside from the three countries’ offer, Palami is also set to accept a similar offer from Germany to host the Azkals training camp this summer for their world cup qualifiers campaign. Germany will also be sending over special coaches and technical experts to help oversee the grassroots program in the country.

Araneta also said the PFF received the $150,000 share of the gate receipts during the two-leg semifinal match against Indonesia in the Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup. The PFF also got a $15,000
bonus for making the semis and this was given to the players with Palami also giving out his share.

Araneta also formally announced the Pana-ad Stadium in Bacolod City will host the Asian football Confederation Challenge Cup qualifiers against Mongolia on Feb. 9. The field is being prepared and lights are
also being added.

The president also said that Mongolia turned down their request to host both games in Bacolod because Mongolia has also heard so much of the Azkals’ success and wants to play them at home. The next game will
be on March 17.

“The Pana-ad pitch is being prepared while more lights are being added so that we can have the match at night and it will be televised.”

Araneta said three major networks are vying for the broadcast rights of the game.
