FCIC slams semis door on USC
FC Inter Cebu (FCIC) shut the door on host University of San Carlos (USC) with a 4-2 win yesterday in the Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC) 10th National Interclub Invitational Tournament at the USC-Technological Center yesterday.
The win sealed the top four spots and both USC and Count FC, winless in five games, are out of the semis hunt.
In the second game, Doraemon took over the No. 1 spot with a 2-1 win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos.
FCIC is third, trailing No. 2 CAFC by two goals. Both have eight points.
USJ-R, which beat Count FC, 7-0, last Wednesday, is fourth with seven points.
USC bows out with three points in five matches.
USC had a chance to sneak into the top four yesterday but couldn’t hold on to its momentum.
Richard Romero scored first for FC Inter Cebu for a 1-0 lead at the end of the first half, while Jan Flores made it 2-0 in the 49th.
Then Prince Anthony rekindled USC’s hopes with two quick goals in the 50th and 52nd minute to level the match.
However, just as quickly, Flores cut short their hopes with a goal in the 54th before Toto Gempesaw nailed the final score in the 62nd.
FCIC will close out its campaign against Doraemon today, while CAFC will take on USJ-R. All four are assured of a semifinal spot and will only be playing for positions.
FCIC can take over the top spot if it beats Doraemon, and CAFC loses. CAFC can also finish at No. 1 if it beats USJ-R and FCIC wins by only one goal against Doraemon or holds the No. 1 to a draw.
In the morning game, the visiting Colegio de Sta. Rita took no prisoners with a 16-0 rout of USC-North Campus to take the top spot with six points. Diomar Canuscay and John Shale Ponsica had four goals each, while Pochol Yuvienco had three for their rout.
In the 14-Under game, Sacred Heart School-Jesuits beat Ormoc, 5-2, and in the 38-Above matches, CAFC B beat Erco, 5-2, while Hiroshi and San Roque FC played to a scoreless draw.
