THE University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) retained its Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. football title after defeating University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF), 2-0, in the finals yesterday at the Aboitiz Sports Field.
JunJun Pintuan put USJ-R up early as he scored the opening goal in the ninth minute after out-hustling the USPF defense.
USPF stepped up its defense and offense and their search for an equalizer but failed.
USJ-R also got more aggressive in the offensive end and managed to sneak in a second goal.
Eduardo Buglosa Jr. struck from pointblank range in the 70th minute, from a well calculated pass by Adriane Mejaran to up the lead, 2-0.
After realizing that their chance of winning the title was bleak, USPF got and frequently fouled the USJR players, resulting to two red cards for its defenders Gritz Pila and Edmar Gacio were sent off from the game after earning their second yellow cards. Gacio was sent of in the 76th minute, while Pila followed two minutes later.
USPF tried to find the equalizer but with only nine men left on the field, it succumbed to its second straight loss to USJ-R in a Cesafi football final.
“We are glad we won. USPF is a very good team and played well,” said USJ-R head coach Mario Ugarte.
Meanwhile, the University of San Carlos (USC) bagged the third place following a 3-0 victory over UV.
USC’s African players were the key to their triumph as both Philip Kenei and Bernard Rotich scored all the three goals.
