Fair Play: Is it time to replace the CFA board?
CEBU football is in turmoil.
It’s no surprise, really.
Cebu football is always in turmoil. It’s a never-ending saga involving back-biting, come-uppance and pissing contests among clubs, peppered only with a few moments of unity.
Jonathan Maximo, the previous president, had more than his fair share of critics. In the last two years of his term, I remember, not a few members couldn’t wait to give him the boot.
The guy before him, Mario Ugarte, also had his. He sat so long in his throne that members decided to stage a coup and kick him out.
Two years into Maximo’s term, footballers were already talking about how “good it was” under Ugarte.
Two years ago, Maximo stepped down. In come Richarde Montayre, Bro. Mari Aberasturi and the rest of the new board. Now, just halfway into their four-year term, some folks can’t wait to have them replaced. I believe someone also commented, “Maayo pa to sa panahon ni Maximo.” (Hmmm, maybe CFA should cut its BOD’s tenure to two years?)
Now, should the board be replaced?
I don’t speak for the football community, nor am I a member.
But I think it would be a wrong move. That opens a whole string of Football Power 1, Football Power 2, Football Power 3...
I mean, why replace the board? What for?
Issues—at least those that don’t dwell on the libelous and ridiculous—raised against the board seems to be all about policy. The best way to deal with policy problems is to talk about it, not to scheme for a new leadership setup.
My beef with the current board has always been on how they take the media for granted, how they seem to assume that because they are a football organization, the media will be there at their beck and call.
It doesn’t work that way. The previous president built that bridge, the present board burned it. And no, that bridge wasn’t built on payola.
Now, despite their lack of publicity, the present board, has indeed, done wonders. They got a lot of projects from the PFF.
Though that may be partially because they stayed neutral when other folks were also trying to unseat the PFF president, they still have done quite a lot in their two years.
Replacing them now means it’s back to square one and could polarize an already polarized community.
There is a congress this Saturday and holding one answers one major criticism against the board—that they are power-hungry.
If they were, they wouldn’t have given their members an avenue to unseat them.
However, the board members aren’t entirely blameless. Their handling of the resignation of Ricky Dakay and the issues his resignation letter raised gave their foes ammo.
They were wrong. They didn’t have to wait for a complaint before they issued their answer. And a statement is a statement even if it doesn’t go through the media. (Like I said, it’s my beef). They could have given theirs directly to the members.
Dakay’s resignation raised a valid question—the mishandling of funds. A copy of the letter was distributed to the community, raising yet another set of questions (Is whoever was distributing it, trying to sow intrigues? Why?).
But the board stayed silent, and just dared anyone who had questions to go to their office and just look at their books.
If I remember it right, Montayre and Aberasturi got most of the votes during the last election. That people are already talking of booting the two out means Montayre and Aberasutri, and the members who voted for them, have different ideas on what direction Cebu football should take.
I hope this Saturday’s congress will give them a chance to iron out that kink.

They should not try to fool members discussing subjects in coaches meeting, agreeing to what was written on the paper, then just few days before the competition change the rules and ask the members to quick submit a lineup hoping that people may not read the changes. Interesting, the changes they made public in the media were not done in the regulations.
Made from football club enemies, the rules are just considering schools as members, so why not just playing 5 times Cesafi football and ask the clubs to organise a real Cebu championship?
Can we not believe what CFA said and wrote? Such things are not honest, I hope the board will think about and correct seriously.
I don't understand what you said regarding the Cesafi. Will you be attending this Saturday's congress?
Keep me posted
For the meeting I hope that something positive come out. I get tired with all those talkings. I prefer to get clear written decisions and no excuses about errors from a secretary.
If you like I can send you a picture next week with many players from today, all from Lapu-Lapu.
Greetings
Manfred
I think Cesafi knows this well and therefore they have there own competition with rules fitting for them. CFA should not copy this.
i totally agree 101.00% with you on not to replace the CFA BOD just yet. to me they have displayed fairness (though not perfect--who's perfect anyway)and is trying to work hard to move Cebu Football forward which you've mentioned has done quite a lot in two years.
most of them does not have the gift of PR probably the reason why they shy away from meadia. again i agree with you that CFA should have that media arm tapped to help them in their communication needs.
last saturday there was an attempt to present a signed document asking for a change in CFA BOD. they claimed that the signatures comes from all of cebu football community. unfortunately those who were there and are members started to ask "wala lagi mi kabalo ana." so medyo naulaw sila and then was never heard off.
but such move could have been a good material if they really had something of substance.
i am now under the impression that the move could be coming from just a few who are unhappy with some BOD personalities which could also be personal.
last saturday i also witnessed that CFA was there open to the members scrutiny and as an obeserver in that congress there were about 3 or 4 people who were trying to ask sensible questions but some of them made a fool of themselves in the process...take note serioso gyud sila sa ilang questions. but in forums like that you also need to understand what you are trying to ask, para nindot sad ang istorya ba, dili balik-balik and naa gyuy tumong.
i was expecting a really prepared group that would stand out and really ask the real questions peru wala gyud nahitabo. totally different from your chatbox mike.
in that congress you would notice that CEBU has become an active footballing community. not content with just kicking balls but also critical in how football should be managed. other FA's who witnessed that gathering said that "swerte mo dinhi sa cebu kay daghan kaayo mo kung mag meeting, didto sa amo maayo lang naay lima." he also wished that we will succeed being the AFC pilot project. 'cause if we do the multiplier effect will surely reach their footballing province.
i wish that CFA detractors would continue to be vigilant and a responsible opposition. that way real issues are brought to the public and are given real attention either from CFA BOD and CEBU Football community itself.
maayong buntag ninyong tanan.
issues are only loudly discussed in your chat-box otherwise they don't bother.
opposition is important in a community because it questions the ruling party. a normal running of minds that oppose in stance should always be welcome to help synthesize issues in moving forward. but substance is also important without it critical thoughts are put to waste and you get nothing out of it but trouble.
Pag presentar ni Quisido sa petion kuno nila, nigamit siya sa term nga "the clubs....the BOD should listen to the clubs...". Dili lang unta siya mo misrepresent by claiming nga he is speaking for the majority.
sakto ka mr.Limpag...a credible opposition is necessary. apan ang pangutana ani is CREDIBLE ba ang oposisyon. Lahi na sa mo oposisyon for the sake of opposing lang.
a chat-box comfortzone is good only for those with limited capacity to endure much like an observer with a vocal mind.
