San Roque rules Cebu Beach Football Open

IT SEEMS playing regularly in a field that is more sand than grass is an advantage for the San Roque Football Club (SRFC).

This after the Mandaue-based club swept both Men’s and Women’s divisions in the just concluded 1st Cebu Beach Football Open at the Basdako Beach in Moalboal over the weekend.

“It’s an advantage if most of your players learn to play football, barefoot,” said SRFC’s Eleazer Toledo of their two teams.

After beating Cebu XP, a team made mostly of expatriates, in the semifinals, San Roque went on with a cardiac finish in the finals.

SRFC defeated Queen City, 1-0, with Romeo Bordador scoring with only 12 seconds left in the match.

Apart from winning the title, Toledo also got the MVP award in the division.

The other members of his team are goalkeeper Jesus Singson, Dante Orejodus, Ramie Catariman, Nelson Yco, Nilo Ferraren, Anthony, Bobet and Randy Colina.

The game is played between five-man teams in two six-minute halves. Unlike in the regular game, time is stopped when the ball goes out of bounds.

Aside from Queen City and XP, eight other teams joined the Men’s division of the tournament with one from Bacolod City and San Carlos City. The event was organized by the Don Bosco Football Club and was sanctioned by the Beach Football Association of the Philippines.

Meanwhile, their women’s team also defeated La Salle Bacolod in a penalty shootout to top the five-team field.

After taking a 2-0 lead, the visitors caught up at 2-all, before San Roque won 2-1 in the shootout.

Christine Mantus, the youngest member of the team, got the MVP award.

The other members of the team are Rhea Mejara, Jacklyn Elnar, Rhodora Toledo, Carmel Colina, Melanie Bordalba, Anna Lou Baz, Iris Meca and Nica and Maritoni Trebol.
