Football in Cebu heats up in Love month

FOOTBALL in Cebu gets lovelier in the month of love as three football events kick off in different parts of the City, while another event winds up with championship showdowns.

First to fire off is “Soccer Mania,” at SM City today. The event, backed by McDonald’s, Solar Sports and SM Malls among others, aims to bring the sport closer to the people, hence the decision to hold it one of the popular hangouts—malls.

“Football is already popular in Cebu, we are just here to strengthen it,” said Rod Nepumoceno during yesterday’s Scoop forum at Baseline restaurant.

“This is not a league. What we want is for people—especially young kids, to try out soccer-related exercises, games, and challenges. We want them to witness how the game is played through game demos and clinics. We will have interactive games like Beat the Goalie, The Juggle Challenge, The Dribble Race, Kick-a-Prize, and Soccer Clinics. And people will have a chance to win a lot of cool, cool prizes along the way," said Nepomuceno, managing director of Crush Philippines, the organizer of the event, in a press release.

Soccer Mania also visited SM malls in Clark, Sucat, Fairview, Bacoor, San Lazaro, and Baguio, and will drop by in Iloilo, North Edsa and at the Mall of Asia later this month.

On the final day of Soccer Mania, the 16-team Aboitiz Men’s League Division B kicks off with FC Inter Cebu facing XSem Bro, Cebu Institute of Tecnology playing Sykes United, Maitland taking on Ramos FC, and favorites Cebu International School—which has former national team members Joshua Fegidero and Oliver Colina—taking on the University of the Philippines.

On Feb. 10, the Aboitiz Boys 12 and Boys 15 finals will be staged, with national coach John Carmona in the sidelines.

Age group powerhouse Don Bosco College, which beat Paref-Springdale, 6-2, in the semifinals, will take on Pepito FC in the 12-Under final at one this Saturday, while Paref-Springdale tangles with Abellana National School in the 15-Under finals in the next game at the San Roque parish grounds.

After the Aboitiz age group finals, the 4th edition of the Thirsty Cup kicks off with more than 100 teams at the Cebu City Sports Center.

The Men’s Open, which ended with two teams in a brawl last year, again attracted the most number of entries with 38, with the Players 10 next with 22 teams.

Aside from the Cebu-based teams, with Springdale leading with 16 entries, the Thirsty Cup also attracted teams from Dumaguete, Bacolod, Tanjay City and Tacloban.
