CIS' Sharpe makes RP U21 Training Pool
IF things look up, the Cebu International School may not just have former national team mainstays in its coaching staff, but also a current youth RP team member in its squad.
This after their ace player and veteran of various national and local competitions Michael Sharpe got a call-up to join 24 other members in the RP Under-21 training pool in Manila this Feb. 14.
Sharpe got the nod of RP coach Bob Salvacion, who oversaw the two-day trials held at the San Roque Parish field and at the University of San Carlos Technological Center.
Salvacion picked Sharpe for his speed, strength and build and also said the youngster has a bright future ahead for the RP team.
However, the national coach wasn't all praises for the Sharpe and spotted several flaws on the player, especially regarding the technical aspect of the game.
"Medyo tagilid konti," Salvacion said.
If Sharpe makes the cut, he will leave for Brunei for the Hassanal Bolkiah Cup on March 3 to 17. Sharpe will also join CIS coaches Oliver Colina and Joshua Fegidero as one of the few Cebu-based players to have done the RP's colors.
And if a certain famous club in England will release one of their reserve for flag duties, Sharpe may be playing alongside Philip Younghusband, the guy who scored six goals in the AFF qualifiers last year.
As to the other players who joined the tryouts, Salvacion said though they have potentials, "kulang sa high-level training,"
Salvacion suggested that CebuFA identify certain players for the various age groups, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 23 and and to provide three to four coaches for their regular training.
He also suggested for the various players to have regular matches.
"They need 30 to 40 competitive matches a year," he said.
