Aboitiz Div. B opens
The Cebu International School opened its Aboitiz Div. B campaign with a bang, whipping the University of the Philippines, 8-1, at San Roque.
With marquee players in Joshua Fegidero, who played his first game since serving a one-year suspension, Oliver Colina, Eleazer Toledo, Jesus Singson, who isn't wearing a goalie's gloves, and Michael Sharpe, all bets were on a CIS blowout.
However, UP managed to hold their own against the CIS attack, which seem to come every other minute. Sloppy finishing, and miscommunaction had the ball crossing the goal mouth, waiting to be simply tapped in the first 25 minutes of the match.
In the 28th, Sharpe broke the impasse, receiving the ball just outside the box, and sensing the UP crowd around their strikers, sent the ball to the top corner for the first goal.
On the other end of the field, the CIS keeper, Red Miguel, seemed pre-occuppied with stretching or counting the errant strands of grass on his goal, with the lack of action and all. But the keeper got the action he wanted in the 44th when sloppy defending allowed a UP breakaway, forcing a save.
A minute later, Fegidero scored the second off his left foot.
Early in the second half, Fegidero had three chances, and Colina had one to score but both bungled. Eleazer Toledo scored the third off a header and Christian Buhisan banged in a rebound for the fourth and the rout was on the way.
In the other games, FC Inter Cebu recovered from losing their 2-0 lead to beat XSem Bros, 3-2, while Cebu Institute of Technology, which has for long been the whipping boys in Collegiate football, finally got to do the whipping with a 4-0 win over Sykes Asia. (word has it that two players exchanged punches.) And Maitland Smith blanked Ramos FC, 6-0.
