RP jumps 11 places...

AFTER posting its best performance in a tournament in more than 50 years the Philippine national team improved 11 rungs in the latest rankings released by FIFA.

The Philippines, which scored three wins in the Asean Football Federation Championships Qualifying tournament in Bacolod City last week, moved to 184th in the world from its previous rank of 195.

In a list posted at Fifa.com, the Philippines earned 34 points in November and 26 points in October.

Still the jump didn’t change much the picture of Asean Football, which will hold its Championship round early next year, as the Philippines only bested newcomer Timor Leste in the ranks of Asean countries.

Laos, which topped the Bacolod tournament, made the biggest jump to 157th place, up from 183, while 2004 Tiger Cup champion Singapore is still the top Asean country at 116th.

Thailand, which disbanded its entire national squad a few weeks ago, is at 125th, while Indonesia is 144th and Myanmar at 150th.

Last

Vietnam is the sixth-best Asean country at 160th, followed by Brunei at 167th and Cambodia at 178th with Timor Leste last at 198th.

Last week, the Philippines lost to Laos, 1-2, in its AFF debut before scoring three straight wins. The country whipped Timor Leste, 7-0, outlasted Cambodia, 1-0, and defeated Brunei, 4-1, to finish second in the event.

Philippines will probably jump up a few steps in the next ranking, since the last two games of the qualifier was after the fifa deadline.

congratulations to the azkals!!! may they continue to work hard and bring glory to the country!!! keep up the good work!!!

by the way, i was able to read about the no-assurance of the fil foreigners to play in thailand...can i be enlighten on this...and if it has something to do with their contract, cant pff do something about this...cause was just wondering why those brazilians for example are playing professionally in other countries but when the time comes that they are needed in the home country...they go home and play...

i hope someone from pff or someone who has knowledge on this can take some time to answer my querry...

thank you.

PFF cant do nothing if for example Chelsea dont want to release Phil Younghusband. All PFF can do is to negotiate and maybe come with a solution that works for both parts. The tournament isnt on FIFAs international match dates, so FIFA cant force Chelsea to release Phil. As for the other players playing lower divisions in Europe or other places, i dont think its that big of a deal. They go if they want.

mikeH, why isn't the AFF championships in the FIFA international match date ?

Phil Younghusband was one of the youth/development players of Chelsea at the time he played during the ASEAN last year. Is the newspaper reports true that he is now one of the reserves for the first team?

eventually, it's the clubs who will benifit most if they allow their players to play for their respective national teams. barring any serious injuries that may happen, a player who performs well for his country often translates into added fan interest on that player and results into more ticket sales or shares from endorsement contracts to the benifit of the club.

chelsea would financially benifit if they allow phil younghusband to glow in the international spotlight for the philippine XI. chelsea lags behind manchester united, real madrid, barcelona, arsenal, england, and brazil in asia as far as fan interest is concerned. having a regular player with asian roots would help their fan base here and would boost interest in the club.

ronaldo, that i dont know.

roberto: Phil was a reserve player last year as well. he was a regular for the reserves team and scored many goals. this season he has been struggling to get as much playing time as last year. i wouldnt really say that he is one of the reserves for the first team since there are so many players ahead of him on the list who will get to play for the first team if there are many injuries amongst the stars.
