DBC, Pepito score routs

AFTER having its game cut short by a downpour last Saturday, the juggernaut Don Bosco College A vented its ire on a hapless FC Inter Lapu-Lapu, 11-0, during its debut in the Aboitiz 12-Under Cup at the San Roque Parish field yesterday.

DBC A’s erstwhile debut against Bright Academy was cut short halfway into the first half after the heavy downpour rendered the field unplayable.

“I think it (Saturday’s matches) will be played in the final day,” said Sherwin Rodriguez of the Cebu Football Association.

DBC, the defending champion and this year’s Palarong Pambansa title holder, seemed impatient to start with a win yesterday as Chino Dela Calzada struck the first goal with barely a minute in.

FC Inter, which also lost 9-0 against Cebu International School last week, had a reprieve of sorts as their defense managed to hold DBC’s for the next 13 minutes.

However, the wily Miguel Caindec, who won the division’s MVP award in last month’s Aboitiz Fiesta, broke the impasse with back to back goals in the 14th and 18th before Junjay Arizabal hit another in the 19th for a 4-0 lead.

Things got worse for Lapu-Lapu in the second half as dela Calzada and Arizabal struck in the first two minutes for a 6-0 lead, before DBC closed out the rout with goals from Noel Christian, John Labajo, Ethan Decena and two more from Arizabal.

On the other hand, Bright Academy got a dose of its own medicine yesterday after losing to Pepito FC, 0-5.

Favorites

It was the second straight win for Pepito, which is also one of the favorites to win the title this year, after it defeated Paref-Springdale last week.

Bright, which scored a 9-0 rout over San Roque FC, last week, managed to hold the rampaging Pepito strikers until the last minute of the first half, when Rogelio Castillon Jr. rolled the ball past Romel Tabelin for a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, Pepito exploited Bright’s weakness in the left flank as John Gomora connected in the 27th and John Melgo added another in the 31st.

Julius Cagibon joined in the scoring act in the 43rd before Castillon closed out the rout in the 45th minute.

In the final game, San Roque Football Club and DBC B ended their game in a scoreless draw.

don't let the lop-sided scores fool you. while DBC, Pepito FC, CIS and Springdale may post large winning margins, the other teams - FC Inter, San Roque FC and Bright Academy - have definitely improved on their last year's performance. rome wasn't built on a single day - these teams will definitely get more competitive once they continue improving their training programs.

unfortunately for FC Inter and San Roque FC, they will not be eligible to play as a team in the City Olympics. the most number of full-side games they can look forward too are the 3 games scheduled for them in this year's aboitiz 12P division . the rest would be festivals.

i was hoping that this year's format for all divisions would be a single round robin, giving the teams at least 7-8 full side games.

Talking about last year's performance, 2005 Aboitiz Boys-12 (1993) Cup had this result:

HiroshiFC (now PepitoFC) vs Bright Academy 3-0

Now, 2006 Aboitiz Boys-12 (1994) Cup had this:

PepitoFC vs Bright Academy 5-0

Thats the true fact.

eric, i think ronaldo is talking about the performance level...not just the score..even if they lost 3-0 to hiroshi last year, bright has indeed improved, despite losing 5-0 this year.

people shouldn't rely on score sheets to gauge a team's performance. if they are true followers of the sport and truly understand the game, the will look at how the team played, their build-ups, their counter-attacks, their defensive positioning, etc.

the score-sheet doesn't mean squat. i've seen teams playing excellently for 89 minutes and 58 seconds only to lose by an error, a penalty, a miss call, a suspect call, or a lucky shot.
