San Roque beats Mulbachs

MULBACHS FC was supposed to be the second-best team in the Aboitiz Women’s Open, but against San Roque FC, the second seed was anything but as Mulbachs fell, 0-1, yesterday at the San Roque Parish football grounds.
On the other hand, there were no surprises in the opening game as the defending champion and top seed Queen City United hacked out a masterful 6-1 demolition of sister team, University of San Carlos.

“Most of my players are still new (to the game) and are very young,” said USC head coach Joshua Fegidero.

In the second game, San Roque, playing in front of a few brave souls from San Roque who braved the drizzle, had Mulbachs on the defensive most of the first half.
However, their lack of finishing had the score at 0-all after the first 45 minutes.

The wily Christine Mantos, who played for Cebu in the National Under-17 finals last summer, kept feeding Melanie Bordalba and Monica Trebol from left flank but the two strikers couldn’t capitalize on the their chances.

Against the Mulbachs defense, the young Mantos seemed a veteran, outpacing and outplaying her defenders almost at will.

“She’s (Mantos) really smart and good, she waits for the player to commit before making her moves,” said one match official in the sidelines.

In the second half, coach Eleazer Toledo placed Rhodora Toledo, a former Queen City player, upfront to bolster their attack to no avail.

However, 19 minutes in, Grace Carion brought down Trebol inside the box and referee Archie Reyes promptly called the foul.

Carmel Colina, another former Queen City player, converted the penalty for the lone goal of the match.

Meanwhile in the first game, the prolific Marlou Solon again came up with a signature performance as she scored four goals --- including a hat trick in the first 23 minutes – in the first half.

Jan Salac and Cristina Fuentes added one each for Queen City before Roseton Bariñan banged in USC’s lone goal in the 86th.

Next week, San Roque will take on Queen City, while Mulbachs will face USC.

the Mulbachs are experienced, older, bigger and stronger while the San Roque Ladies are younger, more mobile and has a slight edge in technical skills and tactics. the game was won just by a penalty shot. that was just one game, i'm sure both teams has a lot of adjustments and tactical improvements in mind.

allow me to post my points regarding the girls under17 team here. the cbox is too restrictive.

i'm confused. when it was reported that tryouts for the ladies CebuFA under17 team was announced, i was under the impression that all interested players will be allowed to tryout. i therefore assumed that the Ladies under17 team, composed mostly of CIS and PaBol players, that participated in the last PFF under17ladies national tournament has been disbanded and we are now forming a new team.

now, some quarters are claiming that the CIS ladies under17 team still holds the right to represent CebuFA. how can that be if this is a new football season and we are forming a new team. thats the reason for the tryouts right ?

the CIS team is impressive, i will agree with that. but if CebuFA policy is to send the champion team, we cannot send them anymore because the championships they won were of last season. to be fair, CIS will have to win festivals and tournaments this year so that they could earn the right to be declared cebu's best team for this football season.

we need to clarify existing cebuFA policy regarding CebuFA teams because this is downright confusing.

let me make an example out of our CebuFA under 17 boys team. the qualifying tournament for that was the Aboitiz Player15 last year. we already knew that the tournament was to be held May2006 (unfortunately it has been delayed), but Springdale's right to form the core of the team is not in question because winning the aboitiz championship earned them that right.

it's different i think with the CIS team. they earned the right to represent CebuFA only for the PFFunder17 last May. this is again a new football season. don't you think CebuFA should open the team up for new players either thru open tryouts or thru qualifying tournaments or festivals ?

if the CebuFA wanted to retain the lineup of the CebuFA team that competed in the last PFF under17 national tournament and the girls are still qualified to play, then they should have just said so. why go thru announcements for tryouts when those who will tryout doesn't have a chance of being part of the team anymore.
