DDS tames Queen City
THE Queen City United ladies team came into the 6th Cebu Inter Club Invitational Tournament Ladies Open at the University of San Carlos Technological Center as the defending champion.
Seventy minutes later, they were “lucky” to just lose by one goal to D’ Davao Survivors (A good word-play -- if not intimidating – on the Davao Death Squad)
From the first whistle it was clear to the handful of souls, who managed to get lost and found themselves at the venue, who was the better team.
When Queen City ran, the DDS ran faster; when they passed, Davao intercepted and passed more accurately; when they took a shot, DDS took five, or more.
Davao’s Analou Ingles, Ellen Cuizon and Rachelle delos Reyes had QCU’s Carmel Openiano scrambling for saves, while the Davao goal keeper – thanks to defender Merlou Albano – was barely involved in the game.
At times, it seems Lady luck – or the lack of finesse of the Davao strikers – helped QCU. A few mad scrambles resulted to no goals, while delos Reyes hit a post and Openiano in a 30-second span, preserving the draw at the half.
“Kung ibutang ni sa cebu nga forum nga dili mananghid, kawatan ang nagbutang. Sige na lang mo pangawat.”
In the second half, Davao’s Roseton BariƱan, who could have put the Energizer bunny to shame with her ability to seemingly pop up anywhere near the ball, finally broke the ice after redirecting Cuizon’s hail mary cross for the game-winner.
Meanwhile, Don Bosco College and Bacolod City set up a finals encounter today in the Men’s Open after hurdling separate rivals yesterday.
DBC defeated host Queen City, 0-1, while Bacolod, led by Norman Fegidero, humbled defending champion Hiroshi FC, 4-0.
Fegidero scored two first half goals and could have made it three via free kick if not for an impressive but costly save by Hiroshi keeper Arndt Kolmar.
Kolmar, who just managed to reach but not tap out Fegidero’s first header, pulled an impressive save off Fegidero’s curling free kick that was headed to the lower right post, but his momentum caused him to hit the post, while his head hit the rough ground, resulting to a nasty cut.
