PLAYING in their very first game as a team the Cebu City Girls 17 team showed perfect form and passing as they whipped Masbate, 5-0, in the Philippine Football Federation National Women's U17 championships at San Carlos City yesterday.
The team, bannered by the Cebu International School, now holds the temporary lead in Group A, after Davao and Bukidnon fought to a 3-3 draw in the other Group A match.
"They played very well today, the midfielders are really working. We also had more than 10 shots, while the other team didn't really have a serious attempt," said coach EleazGroup A match.
"They played very well today, the midfielders are really working. We also had more than 10 shots, while the other team didn't really have a serious attempt," said coach Eleazar Toledo.
In the 19th minute, Bea Maximo connected with Presley Cunningham for a 1-0 lead before Gabby Aboitiz, one of the youngest participants in the event at 12 years old, added another with a direct free kick from 30 yards in the 33rd minute.
In the second half, Cunningham again found the back of the net after an assist from captain Gabi Mercado, while Christine Mantos dribbled from left flank to shoot from 10 yards and Stephanie Sharpe's won a one-on-one two minutes from time for the final count.
The team had more problems dealing with the heat rather than the opponents.
"Lain kaayo ang init dir, mu-paak gyud. They have decided to shorten the games from 40-minute halves to 35 minutes per half," Toledo said. "I'm just hoping that the team won't suffer from the heat in the next few days."
Sharpe became Cebu's first casualty after she suffered from fever.
"Murag sa init guro to, that's why I decided to let her rest instead of letting her attend the opening ceremonies, I can afford not to let her play against Bukidnon," Toledo said.
Cebu will next face Bukidnon today, and will close out their campaign against Davao on Thursday.
"Davao is also a good team, we shouldn't be complacent. They also have a good dribbler who can also shoot from long range, but I think, the girls can beat them, we just have to work hard," Toledo said. "Against Bukidnon, we have to work all through out the match, kay kung murelax, malupig gyud ta."
In the other matches yesterday, Iloilo blanked Iligan, 7-0, while Negros Oriental defeated South Cotabato, 7-1.
