Bacolod Cebu Inter Club, QCU takes third place

BEING one of the “oldest” players in the 6th Cebu Inter Club Invitational Tournament doesn’t mean also being the “slowest” for former national team mainstay Norman Fegidero as he led Bacolod City to a 2-0 win over Don Bosco College (DBC) in the Men’s Open finals yesterday at the University of San Carlos-Technological Center field.

The 36-year-old striker also bested players in the early 20s for the Best Striker award, scoring five goals in the tournament.

It was the fourth bridesmaid finish for DBC, who played minus five key players yesterday, while the West Negros College-manned Bacolod bagged their second Cebu title in three years.

“We won in 2003, and this is the best feeling, to come back as champions,” Fegidero said.

They were not able to defend their crown and Fegidero is hoping they can return next year to defend their crown. Queen City’s Richard Montayre also gamely asked them whether they will return next year before handing the trophy and the P45,000 cash prize.

Fegidero came up with another signature goal in the 24th, scoring from 30 yards with a curling free kick that had DBC keeper Oscar Lemence barely moving.

“Our goalkeeper is playing with an injury and our second keeper is also injured,” said DBC’s Bro. Mari Aberasturi.

Robert Cañedo added another in the 63rd, also from a free kick from left flank to put the visitors comfortably up, 2-0.

Then things got rough as some of the DBC players resorted to rough housing tactics, downing two Bacolod players in a two minute span and earning them five yellow cards from the referee.

Fortunately cooler heads prevailed.

“We (Fegidero and Glen Ramos) are the playing coaches, so when they got physical, I told him that he should correct them, since it does not promote football,” Fegidero said.

Ramos gathered his team during a lull, while he instructed the bench to replace his “hot-headed” players.

Meanwhile, Ronald Loayon struck twice as Queen City defeated Hiroshi FC, 2-0, to take the third spot.

Loayon connected with Ivan Dimco’s pass in the 68th and eluded Hiroshi keeper Ace Mangohig, who provided a few comic antics for the crowd with his signature dive, in the 84th for the final count.

Meanwhile, injured Hiroshi keeper, Arndt Kolamare got the best keeper award, while Cañedo took home the midfielder trophy and DBC’s Jerome Orcullo got the best defender award.

Kolmare cut his head during a bad fall after a diving save of Fegidero's free kick in Hiroshi's semifinal loss against Bacolod.

In the women’s side, Davao’s Merlou Albano scored a rare sweep as she bagged the Best Striker and best defender award, while teammate Rachelle delos Reyes got the best midfielder trophy and QCU’s Carmel Openiano got the best keeper award
