Two Paref players make it to training squad

Two Paref-Springdale players made it to the training pool of the Philippine 14-under team which will compete in the Asian Football Confederation Under-14 Championships in Malaysia next month.

Kevin Tecson and Evan James Mendoza, members of Paref’s Red Ribbon champion team, got slots in the 30-man training pool in the Philippine Football Federation training center in Barotac Nuevo next month.

"He (coach John Carmona) liked their physique and height, and dili sad mabitin sa technical skills," Paref coach Mario Ceniza said.

It will be a second time for Tecson, who stands at 5 foot 7, to play for the RP squad, while this is the first call up for Mendoza, who stands at 5 foot 8.

Twenty-five players showed up for the two-day trials last week.

"Naay dako chance para makuha sa RP team, if kaya nila mokayod didto," Ceniza said, "Tanawun nato unsang ilang reaction...malingaw man sad siguro......sa gi ingun ni john..breathe football, eat football and sleep football for the next two weeks."

Had the opportunity to watch the try-outs for the 1992(Boys 13/14) Phil team. Height and physique is now rightfully the main criteria for selection but it is pathetic to see that only about 6 out of the 25 boys stand more than 5'. Of these 6 taller boys, Mendoza and Tecson from the stand out from the rest at 5'7"+. Where are the tall boys in Cebu? Maybe playing basketball-a sport we dont have an iota of a chance excelling. For me, if one is less than 6'4, forget basketball. What an ideal sight to see many boys standing 5'9 to 6'1 playing football in Cebu. Surely this height is not uncommon in Filipinos. Is it correct to say Negros and Iloilo has taller boys in the sport? How did they do it and what should be done here? Its sad to see that Cebu, the 2nd biggest city, can only contribute 2 players in the national pool of 30.

there is/was an U12 Adidas National Tournament? had no idea there was one. is it still going on ?

it was a national title, but I don't think, it really counts as one of the "national" titles i meant in my question, since it was the predator four on four tournament.

--- the hoops world got an answer to that since we've had an asian 3 on 3 champ already, and lots of national champs in the bastardized form of basketball......

ah in 2003, there was also a National Adidas Lightning Tournament 7-a-side held in Bacolod. For the under 15 category, Paref won over Ateneo 1-0 in a golden goal.I recall Brian Liu scored that one.
