Queen City, Hiroshi drop opening matches

DEFENDING champion Hiroshi FC opened its title retention bid in the Cebu Inter Club Invitational Tournament on a sour note after losing its first game to Don Bosco College-FFC, 2-1, yesterday at the University of San Carlos - Technological Center.

Hiroshi, which lost 11 players to various reasons, found themselves down, 0-2, in the first half after Redrick Viliran, who is from Dumaguete and Warlo Sabella scored four minutes apart.

Fil-German Arntt Kollmare replaced Ace Mangohig in the second half and Hiroshi FC managed to put up a fight, with Epifanio Ynot scoring in the 50th before the Glen Ramos-mentored DBC held on to their win.

Meanwhile, WNC, led by former national team mainstay Norman Fegidero also hacked out a masterful 3-2 win over host Queen City United.

WNC took the lead in the 35th minute after Nene Russel found himself alone in the 35th. WNC could have made it 2-0 five minutes later but Jesus Singson Jr. managed came up with a save.

Ronald Loayon came up with an equalizer three minutes into the first half after redirecting Rene Menchavez's free kick, before Richard CaƱedo made it 2-1 for the visitors in the 65th.

Fegidero scored in the 69th with a perfect strike to the top corner, while Loayon showed his impressive speed in the 83rd, streaking off Ivan Dimco's pass for the second goal.

Today, Queen City will go for a win against DBC, while Bacolod, who is playing with Cebuano Oliver Colina, will meet Dumaguete City. Dumaguete City earlier routed Ormoc, 4-1.

In the ladies' division, the Ladies Football Club-CDO erased a one-goal deficit to beat Ormoc, 2-1. Karen Jumao-as scored first for Ormoc in the 27th before Malou Agura struck in the 33rd and 45th minute.

Meanwhile in the team manager's meeting last Thursday, the organizers allowed the finalists in the tournament to come up with a deal to split the "winner-take-all" purse.

The champion in the men's open will receive P45,000, while the champion in the ladies' and 38-above-divisions will get P30,000 and P15,000 respectively.

"It's up to you, whether you agree to split it 50-50 or what," said Richard Montayre, of host Queen City.

They also warned players who will get a red card in the tournament that they will be banned for the rest of the tournament.
