Cebu City ready to regain Cviraa crown

After losing last year’s Central Visayas Athletic Association (Cviraa) football crown for the first time in eight years, Cebu City coach Francis Ramirez is leaving no stone unturned for this year’s edition of the annual games set next week In Bohol.

“Last year we only had 10 days to prepare, this year we have been training for two to three months,” said Ramirez. Ramirez earned the right to coach Cebu City after his Abellana National School squad topped the Cebu City Olympics last year.

Prior to last year’s defeat, Cebu City held on to the Cviraa football crown for seven straight years.

“We were not able to pick up players last year also, since most of them were already on vacation, this year, we got reinforcements, so our team is really a Cebu City selection team,” Ramirez said.

The players Ramirez picked up for his team are midfielder RJ Sembrano, defender Timothy James Matteo and goalkeeper Paolo Pascual from Paref Springdale, Kyle Soriano and Jerome Batad from Don Bosco College and Michael Sharpe from Cebu International School.

“We have no problems in terms of bonding because the Springdale players were able to understand the system, while Sharpe had already played with us in Cagayan and the Don Bosco players are familiar with my players,” Ramirez said.

Aside from traditional powerhouse Negros Oriental and Dumaguete City, Cebu City will also have another problem to tackle in the Cviraa – the schedule.

With almost 20 teams in the high-school and elementary divisions, organizers will be hard pressed to conclude the games as one venue will only be used for both divisions.

Last year's CVRAA high school team had reinforcements. Francis Ramirez picked up Soriano, Tirol and Galleago of DBTC last year to beef up his Abellana squad. That team lost because several key players choosed to use their fists and dirty tactics thus awarding them red cards. A defensive error allowed the winning goal to slip by Galleago.

The Elementary CVRAA football team is also out to win back the CVRAA title. Last year, Springdale and City Central - champions and runner-up respectively of the city olympics - MYSTERIOUSLY DECLINED to represent Cebu City. Third placer DBTC, composed of grade 4 and 5 students, had only two weeks to prepare for the tournament were the lost by an own goal in the semis, thus unable to play in the finals.

DBTC will be back this year, this time as Elementary City Olympics Champions, to try to avenge that loss. This is the same team that won this year the Milo Olympics, the City Olympics, the Aboitiz P12, the Boscolympics and the CIS P12 Cup. More than half of the players from the 2005 squad hopes to return home this time with the crown in their hands.

Gud lak to your elementary team Brod Naldo. I hope this time there will be no more excuses from you if the result will not be favorable. Your statistics are not enough to win the CVIRAA. Remember your playing in Bohol amd Bol-anons will be a tough nut to crack in their own field. I will be the first one to congratulate you if you win there. But sad to say Im giving your team a 50-50 chance tow win back the crown.

I wondered why Michael Sharpe was able to play for CVIRAA team when he did not play in the City Olympics which is supposed to be the qualifying process. Attention people from Dep Ed who advocates fairplay and honesty.

Good question Atoini. I don't know if the rules has been changed that would allow non-participants of qualifying tournaments to play. Tan of USP played for Springdale so he is qualified. If Sharpe played during the District eliminations then he should be allowed to play.

Care to verify this one Mike ?

If the rules were not changed then the issue of Michael Sharpe tantamounts to cheating. This can be a big black eye to the coach and the Cebu City delegation if this issue is contested by the other divisions. So better be safe while it is still early and the tournament has not starte yet. Remember the issue of Francis in the last Coke Go for Goal elimination way back.

if ever there is an existing rule on this, it will be very hard to check and implement by the CVRAA organizers. How about other teams from Dge,Tag, etc.and not only for soccer but other sports as well.Maybe they will only be strict with the age

Roberto, it is not a question if others are also doing the same thing. The fact is if there is an existing rule, the rules should be followed to the letters to avoid complications in the future. And what about the values which is Dep Ed are supposed to be teaching?

Atoini try to check with the rules regarding the elibility of the players if their are some amendments about it. If i recall some years back when i was playing for the CVRAA team during the Palarong Pambansa in Naga City under the titulage of Coach Glenn Ramos, we picked-up some players that didn't play in the regional. Don't just bark and start another gossip to downgrade the preparation of the team.

Soccermaniac, Read my comments carefully and open your eyes. Why dont you check the rules yourself and tell us? Im just wondering whats the point of having an elimination when it is alright to pick up anybody from anywhere. So, you were doing that during your time? Attention again, DEP ED.

district eliminations determine who will represent the district in the city olympics. for example, Springdale, USP and other schools are grouped in one district so they will have their own elimination tournament. the winner of that district tournament can pick up players from other teams within that tournament as reinforcement in their participation in the city olympics - such is the case of Tan of USP playing for Springdale during the city olympics.

the different district tournament champions will then compete in the city olympics to determine which team will form the core of the cebu city team that will represent the city in the CVRAA. the city olympic champion can pick up any player that is a bonafide student of any school based in the city - as long as that player is approved by DepEd.

the team can also pick up a total of two foreign players who are bonafide students of a cebu city school, again with the approval of DepEd. these two rules apply to Michael Sharpe.

got this clarification from a DepEd official.
