DBC bags five titles
THE DON Bosco College (DBC) football teams reigned in the Cebu International School Friendship Cup after taking five champion's trophy.
The Friendship Cup also depicted the picture of Cebu football – DBC and Paref-Springdale figured prominently in the youth age-groups while the CIS ladies showed they are the team to beat in the distaff side as they swept the two titles.
DBC-Giusseppe A started the title haul for the Bosconians as it defeated Springdale, 1-0, in the Players 6 finals to complete an impressive run of seven straight wins without conceding a single goal.
Lornezo Genzo, scored eight goals in their run while Anderson Villagracia had six, including the title-clincher. Other members of the team are Johann Samosa, Gab Lopez, Graem Liu, Jack Sembrano and goalkeeper Agustin Roa.
In the 8-under finals, DBC defeated M. Lhuillier-Canduman, 1-0, to take home the title, while their 10-under squad also defeated rival Springdale, 1-0, to top the division.
Valentino Calvo scored the lone goal while Jerome Vestil keep the goal clean for their win. Other members of their team are Carlo Abella, Christian Agot, Junjie Arizabal, Levine Inez, Paolo Labajo, Joseph Mercado and Bency Villanueva.
It was an all Bosconian affair in the P12 division as DBC A defeated DBC B, 1-0 to take the crown. Both teams defeated the two Asian Shipping teams, 1-0, in their semifinal showdown.
Don Bosco's 17-Under squad also ruled the 17-Under division, taking the crown, 5-4, after sudden-death shoot-outs. RJ Sembrano missed a chance to take the title for Springdale as he bungled a penalty shot in the dying minutes, sending the game to a shoot-out.
Springdale's 14-Under squad, led by Paolo Pascual averted a shut-out as they took the division after a 2-0 win over CIS.
In the ladies side, CIS A defeated sister team CIS-B, 6-2 in the 19-under division, before their 14-Under team scored a 3-0 shoot-out win over San Roque Football Club in the finals.
Meanwhile despite having 86 teams in the CIS Cup, no untoward incident happened and CIS director Mark Bretherton attributed it to the absence of the men's teams.
"The atmosphere here is calm, yet competitive because the men's teams aren't here. There is no tension," he said.
No player was sent out yesterday and the most heated match was the Under-17 finals between Springdale and DBC, where some of the players got roughhoused.

Comments
galagot jud ko wa ko nakawatch gahapon.
na hala. sa sunod napud.
Hostile comments will come out when egos are touched. You know that already.
I beg to differ. Most of the finals were won by the better team.
P6 was won by the DB-Giuseppe team that won all it's games. No luck involved here, just ability and skill.
I didn't get to see P8 so I can't comment. Ask Mike how it went.
P10 was won by the DB team that won all it's games also (no penalties). The penalty situation in this age group was between Canduman (I think) and Springdale B (I think, who went to the finals and lost) for the semis. No luck involved here, just ability and skill.
P12 was won by the DB team. The two DB teams in the finals won over the two Asian Shipping teams. No luck involved here, just ability and skill.
P14 was won legitimately by Springdale. 2-0 against the home team (CIS) is a very good result. No luck involved here, just ability and skill.
P17 is the only final that meets your description. I personally felt that Springdale should have won that game. They were the better side for me but that missed penalty by Sembrano was just unlucky.
As for the ladies, from what I saw, CIS is the team to beat in Cebu. They are technically better than the average ladies teams here. I think their championship was legitimately earned.
My 2 cents.
5 championships for the 6 age-brackets participated in is great. what others should not fail to note are the other championships DB teams won this school year alone. The Milo Olympics elementary and high school crowns, the City Olympics elementary crown, the Aboitiz Cup P12 crown, the Thirsty Cup P8 and U19, the Aboitiz Festival P10 and B14, and the elementary and high school Boscolympics crowns. also note that competition in these tournaments were equally good teams and that the format of some of these tournaments is the full 11-a-side format.
many has tried to malign, criticized, and bring down the DB football system so to advance their own agendas. even people - "traitors and ingrates" - who themselves benefited or were former players of the program. i guess the championship hardware won this year will prove that these detractors are just mouthing off nonsense.
somebody post the "Da Vinci's Code" here!!! cultists telling knowlegable footballers how to play the game - yeah right. whats next, poison or assasinate those who touch their players like what they did to a pope ?
what's funny is when ignorant fans blame priests for this. this is FOOTBALL were talking here. perhaps becksgirl and her kind makeup their own football tournament wherein any contact against their team would mean an automatic penalty kick. we'll call that "football for wimps".
I saw the springdale-dbtc final. And a few words to the two teams.
Its just a game -- a seven-a-side game at that-- if you want to show who's got the bigger balls or who can pee longest there's another sport and i believe there is a column in our paper about that -- free for all.
They were the oldest age group in the CIS cup...and predictably had the most intesne finals(?) -- perhaps, the pretty young ladies watching from the sidelines was a factor.
a seven a side game, and you get one guy, getting on the face of another guy, taunting, (i was in the sidelines near the DB goal, with another official) heckling, -- if the guy he was talking to was broadback mountainish, he could have kissed him without moving an inch, their faces were that close -- in a seven-a-side game?
I wont name names or name sides -- from my point of view there were players on both teams who were guilty of giving more, but what i am willing to name, is that players from both springdale and don bosco, restrained their teammates, when the game got tough.
*and here's my favorite part. the ref in the game kept on checking his watch until he was told -- cut the game -- (it was at that time, it was really getting out of hand, not the hiroshi-ch out of hand level) better to let the game be decided on penalties than.........so i was told..(that's when i left).
Bay ronaldo, i agree the line against the DB priests was uncalled for -- it's football, it's a contact sport. I saw the springdale player who fell down from cramps, and i dont think he was faking it. He was a reliable kind of guy, the guy who runs until his feet gives up on him, besides he fell when they were about to take the penalty.
my take of the DB-Springdale U17 finals is this, simply, the better team won.
Everytime DB attacked, Springdale had a counterattack, including one instance when the Springdale striker opted to stop and control the ball when he could have one timed it to the goal.
DB deserved the win, but, as i am sure, young as they are, both the db players and springdale may have to take a lesson or two from the p8 division.
springdale was unlucky in that game.
Before that game started, i was watching the DB - SHS-J semifinals in the other field, in a five minute span (impressive goals, not got lucky shots), DB scored two goals, so i went to the other side.
Seeing enzo play is a wonder, he's way too advanced even in the p8, after he scored, he had at least six shots more, all misses, while assisting in four or three attempts. all misses.
I thought, this must be exciting, springdale-db in the finals.
Then in the last two minutes, a canduman striker shoots, the defender turns on his side (and here lies the argument) got hit with the ball on his left (what's the english for braso?) and a penalty is called. Canduman equalizes. On to the shoot-out which went on for the fifht or sixth sudden death kicker before springdale lost in the final shot.
don bosco vs springdale - at any age-bracket - will always be intense. people however has to know that the taunting is simply part of the game. I have yet to see a don bosco vs springdale match that ended without both teams shaking each other's hands. it's good that the coaches and players know that it is just a game.
also, i wonder why becksgirl (whoever she/he may be) felt that her/his team was jeered more when in fact springdale supporters far outnumbered the DB supporters. the DB B17 only had their younger schoolmates to cheer them on while springdale had their usual battalion of supporters.
however, i am amused regarding what you wrote about the ref. that is why i am not a big fan of these seven-a-side festivals - refs can be influenced by organizers. organizers may want a festive atmosphere but we both know that it is completely different from the players' point of view. we look at the eyes of these players from all age-groups and we know instantly that they are there to compete, festival or not. i reason that this is because either of the lack of games or at a very early age, they have already been infected with the "love of the game virus". i do hope that it is the latter because at least we can be certain that there won't be a shortage of football lovers here.
yep..the meaning of "football festival" is sometimes lost when you've played your fifth game or sixth game in a four hour span..
I'd say..supporterwise...the DB-Springdale game was deadeven, springdale had their parents and the pabol girls at their end, and DB got the girls in green (im not so sure whether they are the SHS-J girls) cheering for them.
anyway, i wasnt paying much attention to the cheerers.
Goodpoint, despite heated games, al matches between the two ended with handshakes, not with you-know-what.
The CIS cup, is just the beginning, i hope all future matches between springdale and dbc, will be limited to this -- and not....well you get what i mean.
P.S.
i have witnesses
I really do think that his skills were inherited from his dad (played with Palermo). He wouldn't let go of his trophy!
From what I heard from his mom, both he and his brother Carmelo will be enrolled in a football training school in italy during the break
I only wish that our local talented players had the same opportunity.
As for the DB-Springdale rivalry, I really do think it's great thing to have. The best leagues in the world have a great rivalry, a "Classico".
I know people on both sides and they do respect the abilities of the other. That's the way it should be.
just email me if you managed to contact her
Come on Paul, declare class warfare on me! ;)
