Thirsty launch tonight

THE third edition of the Thirsty Cup – Cebu football’s opening salvo of the year – kicks off with a launching party tonight at the Bright Academy compound in Barangay Banilad.

Just like last year, players and football fans will have a chance to pit their skills in the digital domain in the Fifa 2006 Playstation contest, while the best jugglers will again try to come up with the winning moves in the juggling contest.

There will be also contests for the most accurate kicker, best dribbler, and best in football attire. All winners will get a certificate and a football. Organizers have also set aside football gear as door prizes.

Last year, Sun.Star Cebu editor and weekend goalkeeper Noel Villaflor, defeated Hiroshi’s Frederick Alazas for the Fifa 2005 crown, while Ace Mangohig bested the other jugglers to win the competition – highlighted by his trademark bicycle kick in the hard court venue at Kaona Grill.

“Everybody is invited to the party, not just the players,” Thirsty Cup organizer Charlie Pages said.

After tonight’s revelry, the players will have a two-day rest before hostilities kick off this weekend at the Sacred Heart School-Jesuit field – Cebu's first tournament for the year.

This weekend, one of the common questions in everybody's mind will be: Who can beat Hiroshi FC?

Last year, Hiroshi used the Thirsty Cup as a springboard of an impressive season – winning seven titles in all and losing only twice in Cebu in 2005. All its losses were against a sister team after Hiroshi split up in two for the Shangrila Futsal and Cebu International School Friendship Cup.

Aside from the three tournaments, Hiroshi also won the Aboitiz Cup, Aboitiz Champions League, Cebu Inter Club Invitational and Aboitiz Men’s League Division A crowns.

Outside Cebu, Hiroshi wasn’t as good as it lost in the PFF Men’s Regional in February and against Don Bosco College in a semifinal match in Iloilo.

The age group competitions is just as heated with perennial contenders Paref-Springdale going up against their rivals Sacred Heart School-Jesuit, DBC, CIS while the Canduman Boys of Mario Ceniza are also expected to put up a fight in the younger age groups.
