Queen City debuts today
IT was among the top four teams in the last Aboitiz Cup, and if not for the staggered work-hours of its players, Queen City United (QCU) could be one of the top contenders in the Aboitiz Men's League Division A.
However, the Mario Ceniza mentored club won't clash with the best of Cebu as it will debut today against newcomers Cebu State Colleges of Science and Technology (CSCST) in the second division at the San Roque Parish football grounds.
"We decided to play in Division B because we can only get the players together for practice on Sundays," said Ceniza, a former member of the national champion M. Lhuillier of Graeme Mackinnon.
The club still has Ivan Dimco, Dexter Arrojado and most of its players last year. It has also solved its goalkeeping problems with the addition of Benjamin Sanchez, formerly of the University of Southern Philippines.
However, it lost defensive workhorse Josaphat Sacil and striker Joshua Fegidero. Fegidero now plays for Crazy Horse, scoring a hat trick last Sunday, while Sacil mans the defense for early favorite Hiroshi FC.
In the second game, FC Inter Lapu-lapu goes for its first win against Metropolitan FC. Lapu-lapu lost its debut against FC Inter Cebu, 0-6.
Meanwhile, Paref Springdale, which Ceniza also coaches, meets FC Inter Cebu this Saturday afternoon, after Cebu International School plays Hiroshi.
"We are undermanned in the Under 15, we only have 15 players and we lost Miguel Arriola to an injury while one was forced to quit because of academic problems," Ceniza said.
Ceniza was forced to use his players in the 12-Under to beef up his 15-Under team.
"It's ok because they can compete with the other teams," Ceniza said.
His 12 Under team is currently undefeated and will play Hiroshi FC in the semifinals Saturday morning while CIS plays Don Bosco College.
