BJS hands DBC its first loss

NEWCOMER Blessed John XXIII Seminary (BJS) handed favorite Don Bosco College (DBC) its first defeat after a 1-0 escape yesterday, in their Aboitiz Cup 15-Under match at the San Roque Parish football grounds.

On the other hand, Cebu International School (CIS) lost its chance of barging into the semifinal round despite an easy win.

CIS needed to score 23 goals in its game against Don Bosco Youth Center (DBYC) yesterday to overtake Hiroshi at second and grab the last semifinal spot of the 15-Under division.

But DBYC, the weakest team in the tournament, forfeited its match against CIS - the second consecutive time it failed to show up for its match - which automatically gave CIS a 3-0 win - a far cry from the 23 goals CIS needed to score to advance to the semis.

BJS and DBC, who both scored big wins in their last three games, were evenly matched in the early going before a crucial error by the goalkeeper did DBC in.

The DBC goalkeeper misjudged the ball's flight and failed to tap it out, and Joseph Camus calmly banked the ball into the net for the lone goal of the game.

The win put BJS on top of Group A and it will face Group B's No.2 team next week, while DBC will face the Group B No.1.

Hiroshi will meet Springdale on Saturday to determine the No.1 and No.2 teams its their group.

In the Men's League, Hiroshi blanked Rugmo Debra, 6-0, for its second straight win in Division A, while Wild Cebu Fashion survived San Roque FC, 3-1, in Division B.

With the muddy ground rendering ball control in the penalty area almost impossible, Hiroshi bungled a lot of chances in the first half.

Junard Aguilar's shot from left traversed the goal line, hit the post and bounced back toward the mouth before getting cleared.

Former RP team mainstay Rocky Garciano broke the ice in the 40th with a booming shot from 20 yards and added another in the 44th after his shot from right got deflected into the net for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Marion Cubelo's perfect header got past Noel Sambrano before Garciano and Aguilar scored again in the 70th and 76th.

The second game was a match-up between two San Roque-based clubs, with Wild Cebu getting the better of its neighbors.

Michael Sharpe, who along with CIS teammates Miguel Red and Paolo Cases played for SRFC, gave his team the lead in the 55th, but Ronald Canas leveled the count three minutes later.

Edelio and Eddie YbaƱez got into the scoring act late in the game for Wild's second win.
