UC: we didn't walk out

DID the University of Cebu (UC) walk out of their match last Sunday or not?

Last Sunday, the UC Webmasters left their Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) football match after the University of San Jose Recoletos leveled the score at 1-1 with 28 minutes left. They also refused pleas by tournament manager Bro. Mari Aberasturi for them to return, prompting ref Michael Culibra to end the match.

A few minutes after Culibra ended the match, Aberasturi approached the ref to inform him that UC wanted to resume play. It was too late however, as the decision to end the match stood and a win was awarded to USJ-R.

However, according to UC athletic director Bernard Ricablanca, his coach Glen Ramos told that they did not walk out of their match.

"Glen said that they were just in the field but did not abandon the match, he was cooling off the players," Ricablanca said. After the game last Sunday, Ramos also told reporters that he called his players out to cool them down.

Ricablanca also clarified that he did not recommend to tournament manager Bro Mari Aberasturi to make UC pay a P10,000 fine but instead gave him what sanctions he could give to a team that walks out.

"I had the impression that they really did walk out, so I gave him the options, which was a fine, a suspension or a ban, but when I talked to Glen, he said that they did not walk out," Ricablanca explained. "If it's proven that they really did walk out then there should be a penalty."

Aberasturi consulted Ricablanca since there are no Cesafi guidelines for incidents like last Sunday. "In the absence of ground rules, we should follow the guidelines in basketball," Ricablanca said.

"Walking out is a big offense, it's not in the vocabulary of UC (to walk out), we are being paid to teach our athletes," Ricablanca said, "I also referred Bro Mari to Doc Danny (Villadolid) since I don't have the authority to recommended sanctions and besides I am with UC,"

As to whether UC really walked out or just left the field, veteran Fifa referee Randy Estremos said simply:

"If they did not walk out why did they not return to the field? This is not basketball where they could just ask for a time out," said Estremos, who has officiated in Asian Football Confederation (AFC) tournaments in Malaysia, Brunei and Cambodia.

According to Estremos, no player may leave the field without permission from the referee and only the referee, not the coach, has the authority to stop matches.

"If we were strict about it, there would have been cautions the second somebody stepped out, but we gave them almost 15 minutes and Bro Mari repeatedly wooed them to return but they didn't. Now, that they are being sanctioned they will deny that they walked out?" Estremos said

Then is that a time out? They think its a circus.. So that is why they cool themselves down!! hahaha.. Thats a crazy game. They are leading by a goal, so why walked out? They are changing the rule of football, they want to have a time out, to make a great play, HELLO!!! this is not basketball!!!!!! TO U.C, you are embarassing the school you've represented. To their coach, who is so called "former RP mainstay" is that what a Philippine team do when you are leveled by the opponent? Do they quit also? My advice to their athletic director, send the coach packing, the objectives/goal of the school will not work if he is at the helm, get a better coach, who can truly be reliable... To the tournament manager, I don't think if its appropriate if you would consult on the person, where their team is the one who is in the case. There's no bias, isn't it?
