THE RP Under-23 team stumbled in the final day losing, 1-3, to the Philippine Air Force in the championship of the Barotac Nuevo Men’s Open Invitational yesterday in Iloilo.
The loss dropped the RP team to fourth overall behind PAF, runners-up Philippine Navy and Philippine Army.
“It was a tough game. They scored two goals in the first half before we came within one and Michael Casas was put in,” midfielder Oliver Colina said.
Before RP could score an equalizer, disaster hit after one of its defenders deflected the ball towards his own goal.
In the other game, the Philippine Navy defeated the Army men, 2-1, to place second.
The invitational tournament served as an experiment of sorts for the members of the national training pool, which has no Fil-foreigner yet.
“We still haven’t jelled since we just played together for a few days,” said Colina, “I was placed as a midfielder then as a striker, the coaches really put us in different positions to see what really fits us.”
After the tournament, the RP training pool will return to Manila for another phase of training before it leaves for a tournament in Vietnam and a one-month training in China.
National coach Aries Caslib, which gave the RP pool’s reins to Rolando PiƱero and Melo Sabacan as he was conducting a seminar in Bacolod, will also hold trials for Fil-foreigners in Manila next week.
